These girls are lined up wearing traditional White Hmong clothing as they face a row of boys. As part of the New Year, the boys and girls toss a ball (not the tennis balls shown here) between them. The black ball is the traditional ball and is made of cloth. Each new year, a mother provides the oldest child with a new ball, new clothes and new coins for their jewelry. The tossing of the ball is another way of courting for Hmong young people.
