Holmen's American Legion baseball team will host its annual four-team, one-day, consolation tournament Saturday at Viking Field.

Holmen opens the tournament against Black River Falls at 10 a.m., with Westby and Prescott playing in the second semifinal at 12:30 p.m. The losers of the first two games play at 3 p.m., with the championship game set for 5:30 p.m.

The Legion lost 3-2 and 9-6 in a doubleheader at Black River Falls June 11. Holmen beat Westby 16-7 at the Viroqua tournament June 22. Prescott advanced to the 2007 Class A state tournament.

The Legion was killed by its defense in Tuesday's 6-2 loss at Onalaska, comitting five errors. That tally doesn't include three runs scoring for Onalaska without the benefit of a hit in the second inning, with three walks loading the bases, and two runs scoring on a two-out wild pitch/throwing error/failure to backup.

Shane Peterson took the loss, allowing four hits, five earned and five walks against three strikeouts over the first two innings.

Onalaska's three 1st-inning runs came on a walk, single and Kyle Stewart three-run home run.

“Shane got too deep into counts,” Holmen head coach Duane Vike said. “We played pretty good ball after that.”

Peterson's outing took some of the luster off perhaps the best outing of the year for Jarrod Bock, The right-hander and 2008 Holmen High School graduate allowed one hit and two walks against three strikeouts in the third through fifth. Levi Adank countered allowing a hit with a strikeout in the sixth.

The Legion's best chance to get back into the game in the fourth, with singles from Adank and Mitch Peterson sandwiched around Ben Squier reaching on an error, leaving the bases loaded with nobody out in a 6-1 game after Shane Peterson homered to right an inning earlier.

But Holmen got just one run out of the inning when Corey Jessessky reached on a fielding error. Jarod Dayton popped to third for the first out of the inning, followed by Trey Candahl grounding into a force out at the plate and Bock striking out swinging. The Legion's lone baserunner in the final three innings came on a Candahl one-out walk in the seventh, before a Peterson fly out to shallow right and a Nick Salinas ground ball to second.

Regional pairings have been annouced. Holmen, which will host the six-team, double-elimination tournament beginning July 24, hosts Richland Center in a 6 p.m. game. The first two opening-round games feature Sauk Prairie and Baraboo at 1 p.m., and Onalaska and Reedsburg at 3:30 p.m. The Legion hosted Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Wednesday evening (after the Courier deadline).
