Vernon County has had two 100-year flood events in two years. This is when a 100-year event means it has a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year.

If this climate pattern persists, it means that a Vernon County “event” year is 3.65 days long. Dairyland Power plans to construct a coal ash dump here that withstands 25-year floods.

Measuring in Vernon County “event” years, this means that if the dump is constructed, it has a 1 percent chance of failing every 91.25 days. Those are bad odds.
