Former Holmen principal hired at Viterbo
Bernie Ferry, the just-retired Holmen High School principal, is the new assistant director of educational leadership at Viterbo University.
In the new position, Ferry will be working with nearly 200 graduate level teachers who are studying to become principals and curriculum directors. Viterbo has just added a new program to license graduate teachers who want to direct special education and pupil services programs. Ferry will also assume responsibilities that will touch all areas of the university’s graduate education programs.
Ferry was principal at Holmen High School since 1996 and, in all, he has spent 38 years in education.
“I look forward to working with Bernie,” said Jim Bagniewski, director of Viterbo’s educational leadership program. “He brings years of educational leadership experience to this new position and he will be able to share many of these valuable experiences with our students.”
Pet of the week
Eddy is a 1- to 2-year-old Beagle. If you are a Beagle lover looking for a silly and active boy, Eddy loves to play with toys and enjoys spending time basking in the sun (on not too hot of a day, of course). He enjoys exercise and will make a great walking, jogging, or running partner. He also knows several commands that include sit, down, and stay. Eddy may be a great candidate for adoption into a home with other dogs and cats, however, this is not a requirement. Eddy can play a bit rough with toys and is startled by loud noises. This can easily be managed with proper guidance and training, for which we can provide help. Due to this, he will be most successful if adopted into a home with slightly older children, approximately 5 years of age and older. For more information on Eddy or any of the other animals we have, contact 781-4014 or stop by Friday through Monday from 1 to 5 p.m. or Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m.

Franciscan Skemp to offer pre-diabetes presentation
Approximately 20 million Americans have diabetes. Nearly one third are unaware that they have the disease.
An additional 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes, a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
Having pre-diabetes means you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. You may delay or prevent this through healthy lifestyle changes, including regular physical activity, meal planning and weight control.
To learn more, plan to attend a free presentation on pre-diabetes presented by Franciscan Skemp Certified Diabetes Educator Ann Skemp.
The presentation will be offered Tuesday, July 29 from 9 to 10 a.m. at Franciscan Skemp’s La Crosse Campus St. Francis Building, Marycrest Auditorium (2nd floor).
There is no charge for this presentation, but seating is limited. Please register one week prior by calling (608) 392-7824 or logging on to
