Published - Thursday, July 10, 2008 LETTER: Obama had backed Washington gun ban I don’t know which is worse, Barack Obama’s change of stances on issues or the mainstream media’s desire to ignore it. Take the Washington, D.C., gun ban that was challenged recently in the Supreme Court. In the 1990s, as a candidate for the Illinois Legislature, Obama supported legislation to “ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns,” so it made sense that he endorsed the gun ban being challenged in Heller vs. the District of Columbia while campaigning for president. In November, his campaign told the Chicago Tribune that “Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional.” In February, during a televised forum, when a questioner asked if Obama supported the D.C. gun ban, Obama happily agreed. However, when the court issued its 5-4 ruling last Thursday against the gun ban, Obama claimed that his views had been vindicated. What? Why isn’t the media all over this obvious lie or reversal of belief? This is really nothing new. Obama has been flip-flopping on many issues: Campaign finance, town hall debates, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and meeting with heads of terror states without preconditions. How can we trust this man? How can we trust the media to expose the truth?
