Dozens of examples of American currency from the past 230 years will be part of a new exhibit at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, Minn.

The exhibit, titled “From the Vault: Historic Currency from the 18th to 20th Centuries,” will be on display in the museum’s atrium July 1-13.

More than 80 pieces of currency make up the exhibit. Some of the notable notes include:

  • Fractional currency — paper notes in 5 to 50 cent denominations, printed during the Civil War due to coin hoarding.

  • Colonial notes — American currency issued while under English rule.

  • Large size notes featuring the best in monetary design from 1861 to 1928.

  • A $5,000 bill — one of only 143 left in the world.

  • The “King of Error” bill — the face shows a $5 bill, but the back shows a $10.

The public is encouraged to visit exhibit sponsor Merchants Bank’s Web site at www.merchantsbank.com/winona to download a coupon good for free student admission and half-price ($3) adult and senior admission.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission costs $6 adults and seniors, $3 students and is free for children age 4 and younger. Students also are admitted free on Tuesdays thanks to support from Target.

For more information about the museum, its programs, lectures, exhibits and events, call (507) 474-6626 or visit www.minnesotamarineart.org.
