Holmen's Junior Legion baseball team opened its 2008 season by breaking open a close game with Bangor with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on their way to a 13-3, six-inning win June 4.
Ross Kerska earned the win, striking out six over the final five innings. Brennan Drugan retired the side in order on two strikeouts and an ground out in the sixth, before a Spencer Westerveld RBI double drove in Jon Powell with the game-ending win in the sixth.
Luke Medinger's squeeze bunt drove in Kerska to begin the fifth-inning rally. Bennett Johnson also singled, while Jake Kramer notched an RBI double in the surge.
Holmen took the early lead with the game's first four runs in the second, including a Jim Clark two-run double, Tony Rybold RBI single and sacrifice fly. Taylor Hauser and Ethan Bock also scored in the flurry. Bangor got back within 4-3 in the fifth to set the stage for the Legion's eight-run fifth.
Holmen's roster features seven sophomores among its 18 players. The Legion hosts 4 p.m. doubleheaders with Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Monday and the La Crosse A's, the summer team for Aquinas, Thursday.
