Published - Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Wopat honored as HHS Teacher of the Year Holmen High School French teacher Brian Wopat has been named HHS Teacher of the Year, and he said being chosen by his peers for the honor means the world to him. “It is humbling to think that they view me as an outstanding educator and feel that I greatly contribute to the positive climate at Holmen High School,” Wopat said. Holmen High School is the first and only place he has taught since graduating from UW-La Crosse, where he earned a master’s degree in addition to a bachelor’s degree. Wopat said he loves interacting with students and says teaching is “all about getting to know the students on a personal level and making them feel safe at school.” Wopat’s passion for teaching was partially inspired by having great teachers while he was growing up. Wopat said the impact his teachers had on him helped him to pursue his dreams and become the person he is today. The first reaction Wopat had to being named Teacher of the Year was shock. “I’m still in disbelief that my colleagues nominated me,” he said. Wopat noted that behind every great teacher is a great support network of teachers, family members, community members and, above all, students. In addition to teaching French, Wopat is an advisor to the Renaissance Action Team and International Club. Above all, Wopat wanted to get across his gratitude. “Merci beaucoup,” he said. “Thank you to all those who believe in my dreams and visions — no matter how far out there they may seem. You all had a tremendous impact in helping me become the teacher I am.”
