I recently became aware of a situation that bothers me.
The speaker this year for the Melrose-Mindoro baccalaureate service on Sunday was Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch. This service is planned by local ordained ministers, and the minister in charge this year chose Mr. Huebsch to speak at this religious service.
I questioned the minister in charge about this practice, and he said he knew Mr. Huebsch personally and thought him to be a fine Christian man. I am sure he is right, but it seems to me that even though this is an election year, an ordained minister would have been a better choice. I believe that the class of 2008 deserves an ordained minister to conduct their service, even though it is their choice whether or not they attend.
I know the school has to remain neutral in this matter, but given the number of churches within the Melrose-Mindoro School District, an ordained minister should conduct the service. I was told by the one in charge that no minister was available.
Thank goodness the graduating seniors will be honored at their own churches. Most of the churches don’t turn their services into political rallies.
